Grassroots Weaving, 2023
Grassroots is a series of weavings inspired by Circularity and Cyclicality. Nothing stays the same - grass itself reveals the constant movement of Time, decay and re-birth.
Further they explore the concept of plant as medium - and the beauty of the ephemeral. Grass, like we, shall die, decay, and seek the light once again - perhaps in the form of flowers.
In a similar way, no piece of grass is the same, we all hold our own identity yet in the universal sense we are all the same. Grass blowing in the breeze forms a collective of sorts, we cannot make one blade out from another.
Perhaps most importantly, grass has roots that connect us all.
It’s best we always remember those.
The making of Grassroots involved lots of experimentation.
Initially I imagined the weave as a fence, like a grass-made border or boundary between the natural and superficial.
I quickly realised that plants have other plans. The first few weaves turned damp and decayed to almost nothing. This natural process inspired me, but I am currently working on ways to preserve the grass better so the lifetime of the artwork is extended.
